Gutter Cleaning in Shell Beach

Shell Beach gutters fill up on properties that have no tree anywhere near them, because the load arrives on the wind off the bluff rather than falling from above. What is in there is sand and salt, and neither of them will flush out.

The debris here did not come off your trees

There is barely any canopy on this bluff. A few wind shaped cypress and pine in yards, ice plant and coastal scrub on the cliff edge, and that is it, which is why owners on the seaward side of Shell Beach Road are surprised to find a full gutter on a lot with nothing growing over the roof. The onshore wind lifts fine material straight up the cliff face and drops it, and it carries whatever the properties upwind are shedding. So the load is not a seasonal drop from directly above, it is a steady daily arrival of small material from somewhere else entirely.

That changes what is in the trough. Instead of leaf you get fine sand, dried scrub litter, cypress needle and feather, all bound together by salt into a dense grit that packs rather than floats. What that costs on this bluff is weight and contact. A long seaward run carries real load on hangers that are already corroding from the inside, and every hour the packed material sits there it is holding salt hard against the metal it is sitting in. None of it arrives in a rush either, so there is no week in the year when an owner can look up and decide the gutter has only just filled.

The corrosion is the part that costs money. Salt sitting in a metal trough through six rainless months is an electrolyte in permanent contact with the seams, the fasteners and the back edge against the fascia, so a Shell Beach gutter tends to fail from the inside at a seam rather than sagging visibly first. Clearing here is half a corrosion inspection. It is also the run nobody has ever looked at, because on a bluff top home the seaward gutter hangs over the drop with no ground under it to stand on.

What changes in Shell Beach

  • A lot with no trees on it still fills up

This is the thing owners here do not expect. Wind coming up the cliff face carries sand and dried scrub litter over the roofline, and it lands in the gutter whether or not anything grows on the property. A Shell Beach house with a bare lot and open sky above it can plug a downspout as thoroughly as a house standing under a mature oak.

  • Sand and salt make a sludge that will not flush

A packed salt and sand deposit has to come out of a Shell Beach trough by hand, and the elbow worked, before anything is flushed. What matters more than the clearing is what that uncovers: lifting the material is the only chance anyone gets to look at the seams and the fasteners on a bluff top run, and on the seaward side that is a run nobody has had ground to stand under.

  • The damage happens in the dry season here

Away from the water a trough full of dry litter is not attacking the metal it sits in. On the Shell Beach bluff those same six rainless months are when salt is landing in the trough every single day with nothing to rinse it. Summer is the corrosive season on this stretch, which is backwards from every town away from the water.

  • Gulls use the seaward roofline

Bluff top houses sit on the gull line, so nesting material and droppings come off the ocean facing roof and end up in that gutter run. It holds water, it is acidic, and it collects in the same spots every year. It is one more reason the seaward run needs looking at on a different schedule from the street side of the same house.

How often, here

Once a year before the first storm covers most Shell Beach properties, with the seaward run worth a mid year look because its load is sand rather than leaf and it arrives steadily instead of in one autumn drop. That is a different logic from the neighbors. Pismo Beach needs two, and puts its second in the middle of summer, because eucalyptus sheds bark hardest through the dry months rather than at the end of a season. Grover Beach sits in the same onshore wind as this bluff and still runs on a different clock, because down on the flat the grit lands on the roof and waits for running water to bring it down, while up here it is blown straight into the trough. On this bluff there is no season to aim at, so the question is not when the trees drop, it is how long the salt and sand have been sitting in the metal.

The light literally shines brighter

Every word below is lifted straight from Corey's Google profile. Nothing written by us, nothing tidied up.

Crystal Clean was at our house this morning to clean all the windows on the first and second story and did a wonderful job. Corey is a perfectionist and is very detail oriented. He cleaned the windows inside and out, cleaned the screens, cleaned the tracks, and even all the window sills.

The best!!! On time, very confident and considerate inside our home as well as outside. Corey and his son are very professional at what they do. 2 objectives we needed done. 1 very hard to reach interior skylight and our solar panels needed cleaning. We will definitely have them back on a yearly maintenance plan for sure.

Communication was top shelf. Timely, arrival and departure. Fairly priced to local competition. Professional, beginning to end. Ran a clean operation, wore booties over shoes inside without asking, never noticed they were here after they left due to picking up after themselves. Our 3 story home was no easy task but they managed to clean all of our 27 windows just fine.

If I could give Crystal Clean 10 stars, I would! My pergola was extremely dirty and moldy as my home power washing attempts could never get it clean. I was considering taking it down it was such an eyesore. It now looks brand new without a trace of mold to be found!

Cory was responsive from our very first contact, always following up and showing up. And our windows are literally sparkling, which I thought was just a phrase. The company uses soft water which reduces water stains.

Crystal Clean A1 has cleaned the solar panels on our house and HOA pool house twice now. Both times they were easy to communicate with, arrived as scheduled, and did a thorough job for a reasonable price. They're an easy company to recommend.

Double glaze window cleaning perfection. At last a window cleaning company that really provides service. Timely and professional. Most window companies fall apart after first visit. For now 10 out of 10. Look no further, you found it.

Questions from this area

Why do my gutters fill up in Shell Beach when I have no trees?
Because on this bluff the material does not fall, it arrives on the wind. Shell Beach sits on cliff top lots with very little canopy, and the onshore wind lifts fine sand and dried scrub litter straight up the cliff face and over the roofline, along with whatever the properties upwind are shedding. It accumulates steadily all year instead of dropping in one autumn week, so a Shell Beach house with a bare lot and clear sky above it can end up with a plugged downspout while the owner assumes gutters are only a problem for people with oaks. Checking it before the first storm is the same advice, for a completely different reason.
Can sand be flushed out of a gutter in Shell Beach?
No, and trying is how the plug gets worse. Sand carried up a Shell Beach bluff mixes with salt and sits in the trough as a dense wet grit. It sinks rather than floats, so a flush runs straight over the top of it, and it packs harder into the downspout elbow with every attempt. A blower does nothing to it either. Crystal Clean A1 Window Services clears Shell Beach gutters by hand into a bucket, works the elbow from both ends where it has set, and only then puts water down each spout to confirm it is passing at the bottom.
Does salt air damage gutters in Shell Beach?
Yes, and it works from the inside out. On a Shell Beach bluff home salt lands in the trough every day for the six months of the year it never rains, so it sits in permanent contact with the seams, the fasteners and the back edge against the fascia. These gutters commonly fail at a seam or at the hanger line before they ever look like they are sagging, and the fascia behind the seaward run is often the wettest wood on the house. Clearing the trough is partly an inspection for that reason. Crystal Clean A1 does not repair, rehang or replace gutters and does not install gutter guards, but you will get photos of anything failing.
When should gutters be cleaned on a Shell Beach bluff home?
Late September through early November, in the same window most of San Luis Obispo County works to, ahead of the first real storm, with one addition specific to this bluff. The seaward run on a Shell Beach property is worth a second look partway through the year, because its load is wind carried sand rather than a seasonal leaf drop and it builds continuously. That run is also the one nobody has inspected, since it hangs over the cliff with no ground beneath it.
