Ten miles inland changes everything about your glass
Close enough to the ocean for the fog, far enough for the heat. Both leave something behind.
San Luis Obispo sits in a gap in the hills about ten miles from the water, and that distance is the whole story. The marine layer still pushes up the valley most mornings, so glass here picks up a salt haze, but it is a fraction of what Morro Bay or Shell Beach deal with. Then the fog burns off by ten or eleven and the afternoon turns genuinely hot, which bakes whatever is sitting on the pane into place. Coastal deposit, inland drying. That combination is specific to this stretch.
The housing stock makes it worse in an interesting way. A lot of the town is built into hillsides, up on the Terrace, along Ferrini, above Foothill, out toward Johnson. Hillside lots mean upper stories that are two floors on one elevation and three on the other, awkward ladder footing, and windows that face straight into afternoon sun and wind. You cannot quote a house here off a floor plan. Someone has to walk the lot.
Then there is the twenty thousand or so students. Cal Poly rentals turn over hard every June and September, and landlords and property managers around Foothill, Grand and the streets off California all want the same two weeks. Downtown is its own thing again: Higuera and Marsh storefronts want glass that looks clean at eye level from the sidewalk, on a schedule, and they want us in before the shops open.

None of this is generic. These are the problems that show up here and not necessarily ten miles down the road.
Hillside lots and the two heights problem
On the Terrace, Ferrini and the streets climbing off Foothill, a house that is single story at the street is often two or three at the back. That is where a water fed pole earns its keep, because footing a ladder on a slope below a downhill elevation is how people get hurt. We look at the lot before quoting rather than counting windows off the front.
Fog in the morning, real heat by two
The daily cycle here deposits and then bakes. Salt haze settles overnight, the fog clears mid morning, and the afternoon sun sets it. Clean too early on a foggy day and the glass dries spotted, so on marine layer mornings we work the shaded elevations first and come back around to the east side once it has burned off.
Student rental turnover in June and September
Every landlord and property manager near campus wants the same two weeks twice a year. Move out condition on rental glass is usually worse than an owner occupied home, with tape residue, stickers and a year of nobody touching the tracks. Booking that work ahead of the rush is the difference between getting it done and joining a queue.
