Nothing rains here from May to October. Half a year of dry weather means whatever lands in your gutters sits and compacts instead of washing through. Coast live oaks around Atascadero, Templeton and Creston drop tassels in spring and leaf all summer. Monterey pines in Cambria and Cayucos shed needles the whole year, and needles are the worst of it, because they mat into a felt that water will not pass through. Then the first real storm arrives and the gutter works like a shelf instead of a channel.
Water that cannot get down the downspout goes over the front lip in a sheet. That sheet lands against the wall and at the base of the foundation, exactly where you least want it. On stucco it shows up as a dark run under the eave that never quite dries out. Over a winter it keeps the fascia board behind the gutter wet, and soft fascia is what lets hangers pull loose and a whole run sag. In Cambria and Los Osos, where fog holds the damp in shaded corners for days, that debris never dries at all and turns into a compost trough with seedlings in it.
Inland it is a fire problem before it is a water problem. A gutter packed with dry oak leaf and pine needle is a line of kindling running along the edge of your roof, sitting right where wind driven embers land. We walk the roofline before anything comes out
Loose spikes, rusted seams, a run that has already dropped at one end, soft fascia behind the gutter. You hear about all of it before we start, not after. If something is going to come away in our hands, we would rather show you and photograph it first.
Debris comes out by hand, into a bag
Blowing a gutter out sounds faster and causes three problems: wet matted needle does not blow, grit gets driven up under the tile course, and the plug in the downspout elbow packs tighter. So it comes out by hand, into a bucket, and it leaves with us.
Every downspout gets flushed and watched
Clearing the trough is only half a gutter clean. Water goes down each downspout from the top while somebody watches the bottom outlet until it runs clear. Elbows are where the plug usually sits. If it will not clear from above, we work it loose from the bottom.
We check the fall with water still in it
Once the flush is done we look for standing water. Water sitting in the trough means the fall is off or a hanger has dropped, and that is how gutters rot from the inside out. We tighten what a screwdriver fixes and show you anything that needs a gutter contractor.

What we do not do
Worth saying plainly, so nobody is waiting on something we were never going to do.
- Gutter guard or leaf guard installation. We do not fit them and we do not quote for them.
- Gutter repair, rehanging or replacement. We tighten what a screwdriver fixes and flag the rest for a gutter contractor.
- Roof cleaning. We take loose litter out of the valleys next to the gutter, but moss and algae on the roof surface itself is covered on the roof cleaning page.
- Washing the black streaks off the outside face of the gutter. That is a washing job rather than a clear out, and it sits with house washing.
- Clearing underground drain lines past the downspout outlet. That needs a drain contractor with a camera and a jetter.

Two and three story work means more ladder setups and sometimes a lift. Steep clay tile also slows things down, because we stay off the tile wherever there is a way to reach from a ladder.

Dry oak leaf lifts out in handfuls. Two seasons of matted pine needle with soil and seedlings in it is a different job, and it weighs a lot more going into the truck.
How long since the last clean
Yearly maintenance is quick. A gutter that has not been touched in three or four years usually means blocked elbows and often an underground outlet that has to be worked from both ends.
