Which one you have decides whether this is a job or a replacement.
Nearly every stained window we get called out to was hit by a sprinkler. A head drifts a few degrees over a season, throws across the lower panes at six in the morning, and the sun has it dry before eight. The water goes, the calcium and magnesium stay. Do that every other day and you build a scale layer you can catch with a fingernail. Inland wells run harder than district supply, so Paso Robles, Creston, Templeton and the ranch properties out toward Santa Maria show it worst and show it fastest.
For the first season or two that mineral is a deposit. It is sitting on top of the glass and it comes off. Leave it and it stops sitting there and starts eating in. Glass is less inert than it looks, and alkaline mineral held against it dissolves the surface into a cloudy, pitted layer that is now part of the pane. Long rainless summers are why it gets that far here. From May through November nothing rinses the glass between sprinkler cycles, so the same spots reload week after week.
Shower doors go the same way, only faster, because they get soaked twice a day and nobody squeegees them. Frameless clear enclosures show every bit of it. We see the same thing on storefront glass along the Highway 101 corridor where irrigation runs beside the sidewalk, and on ocean facing windows in Cayucos, Shell Beach and Morro Bay where salt film off the marine layer and sprinkler mineral land on the same pane and set into one hard gray haze.
How the job actually runs
Corey Byler is on the job, not just the invoice, and none of this is handed to a subcontractor. Restoration is slow, hands on work, so the first thing we do is find out whether it is worth doing at all.
Test patch first, straight answer second
We work a small square in a bottom corner, rinse it and look at it dry. If that patch goes clear, the rest of the glass will too and we can price the job. If it stays cloudy, the pane is etched, and you hear that before you have spent anything.
The glass gets washed before anything else touches it
Dust, harvest grit off the Paso and Edna Valley vineyards and ordinary road film all get washed off first. Grit trapped under a pad is how glass gets scratched, so nothing abrasive goes near a pane until the loose material is gone.
Mineral comes off by hand, pane by pane
An acidic cleaner dwells on the deposit to break the bond, then it is worked off with a fine pad, several passes where the scale is thick. It is done a panel at a time because the product cannot be left to dry on the glass.
Frames, seals and everything underneath get protected
The products that dissolve mineral will stain anodized aluminum, dull painted frames and burn plants. Frames and gaskets get covered, stucco and planting below get wet down first, and the whole area gets a full rinse when the glass is done.

You get shown the head or the fitting that put the water there, because fixing that is what keeps the glass clear. Then every job ends with a walk around before we pack up, and anything you are not happy with gets put right there and then.

What we do not do
Worth saying plainly, so nobody is waiting on something we were never going to do.
- Etched glass. Once the mineral is into the surface it is permanent, and no product or pad brings it back. Replacement is the only fix and we will tell you that instead of taking the money.
- Glass replacement. We do not cut, order or fit glass. We will tell you which panes are past saving.
- Fogging between double pane glass. That is a failed seal, not hard water, and a glazier handles it.
- Sprinkler adjustment or water softening. We show you what is causing it, a landscaper or plumber makes the change.

What glass restoration costs around here
This is priced separately from a window clean because it is a different job at a different speed. Central Coast market rates generally run somewhere between $5 and $20 per pane on top of a standard clean for light to moderate spotting, rising to roughly $30 to $75 per pane where heavy scale has to be worked by hand, and shower enclosures commonly land between $75 and $250. Those are regional ranges to set expectations, not our quote. Send an address and photos of the worst pane and you get a real number.
Deposit or etching
The test patch decides everything. Surface deposit is a priced job. Etched glass is not a job at all, and we would rather lose the work than charge for a result nobody can deliver.
How many summers it has been building
One irrigation season usually lifts in a pass or two. Five years of overspray on the same lower panes means longer dwell time and repeated passes, which is where the hours go.
How much of the glass is affected
It is rarely a whole house. Usually it is the lower panes on the sprinkler side of the property, so the quote follows the affected glass rather than the pane count.
What the glass actually is
Coated low emissivity glass, applied tint film and older leaded panes all limit what can safely be used on them. That gets checked before quoting, not after.
What surrounds the glass
Anodized frames, stucco walls, a deck directly below or planting up against the house all need covering and rinsing. Masking time is real time on this service.
Shower doors versus exterior windows
Shower glass carries soap scum and body oil sitting over the mineral, so it comes off in layers, in a small warm room, with the hardware to work around.
