The gradient here runs up the wall, not around the house
On the open coast the question is which way a wall faces. In Morro Bay it is the shaded north one, in Grover Beach it is the one taking the wind off the dunes. Walk an Arroyo Grande street and the pattern is different. On plenty of houses all four elevations look similar, and what changes is height. The first six or eight feet of stucco is noticeably flatter and grayer than the gable end above it, and the line between them is soft rather than sharp. That gradient is the town writing on the building.
Two things travel low here and they arrive together. Soil lifted off the valley floor by afternoon field work moves close to the ground and drops out of the air within the first few feet of a wall. The marine layer that comes up the creek at night pools in the low ground the way cold air does, so the bottom of a wall is also the part that stays damp longest into the morning. Heavy delivery and a damp surface, in the same six feet, several hundred times a year. That is why an Arroyo Grande house dulls from the base.
The band carrying that load is also the busiest six feet of the building, which is not true of anything higher up. Weep screed and the bottom edge of the stucco sit in it. So do crawl space vents, hose bibs, dryer and combustion vents, outlets, and on a Village house the water table trim and the lowest boards, carrying the oldest paint on the wall. Everywhere else on a house the dirty part is plain field. There the load comes down out of the tree instead of up off the ground, a fine sticky residue through the warm months with dust held in it, and the darkest part of the wall is the top rather than the base. It wants a longer dwell than plain valley soil does.

The field above it holds up for three years or more, because very little is reaching it and it dries fast. Put the whole house on one cycle and you either overclean the gables or leave the base far too long. Santa Maria sits out on the same farmed floor and does not split by height at all, because the afternoon wind there loads a full elevation in one go and puts the envelope on a single annual number. Worked ground close by on the east side shortens the lower band, and a fence, standing inside it end to end, comes round sooner again.
